Purpose
To promote health and prevent disease in the school, home and community through the management, consultation, development, execution and evaluation of plans that impact student health.
The Cumberland County Department of Public Health’s School Health Program works collaboratively with the Cumberland County School System to deliver these high-quality services in a manner that is equitable, impactful and evidence-based.
Schools
The School Health Program is responsible for providing services to the following:
87 Public Schools that include:
- 52 Elementary Schools
- 18 Middle Schools
- 17 High Schools
- Private and Parochial Schools as needed
- Charter Schools as required
Services Offered
The School Health Program provides a vast array of services that include but are not limited to:
- Hearing screenings
- Vision screenings
- Student immunization review
- Referrals and linkage to care
- Educational classes to students with chronic health conditions
- School staff education on various health related topics
- Health counseling
- Home visits
- Other screenings and assessments when indicated
The Future of the School Health Program
The School Health Program currently has about 30 School Health Nurses covering 87 schools in Cumberland County. Our goal is to grow our team to have one Nurse in every school, every day, to ensure that the health and wellness needs of students are met and as a result, their education is positively impacted.
