Cumberland County Honors Former Commissioner Talmage “Tal” Bagget

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Government joins the community in mourning the loss of former County Commissioner Talmage S. “Tal” Baggett Jr., who passed away on July 13, 2024, at age 74.

Baggett served as an elected official in Cumberland County for more than two decades, first as a County Commissioner from 1998 until 2006, and then as a District Court Judge from 2007 to 2018. As a County Commissioner, he served as Vice Chairman in 2002 and as Chairman in 2003.

During his tenure on the Board of Commissioners, Baggett was involved in numerous key initiatives, including the expansion of local schools, improvement of public services and establishment of the Eastover Sanitary District. His work in economic development helped attract new businesses to the area, creating jobs and fostering growth across the county. Baggett was also an advocate for the agricultural community, water and sewer infrastructure enhancements, and veterans affairs.

"Tal Baggett was a true champion for Cumberland County. His leadership and dedication have left an indelible mark on our community," said Cumberland County Board of Commissioners Chairman Glenn Adams. "He was a visionary leader whose efforts helped shape the future of our county. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family during this difficult time."

Adams called Baggett a dedicated public servant and a pillar of the community, who was committed to the welfare and development Cumberland County’s residents, and who left a legacy that continues today and will reverberate for years to come.

"Former Commissioner Tal Baggett was a beacon of integrity in Cumberland County. His unwavering dedication to public service and his profound impact on our community will never be forgotten," said Commissioner Jeannette Council, who joined the Board in 2000 and served with Baggett. "His legacy of advocacy and leadership will continue to inspire us all."

A public memorial service will be held on July 18 at 11 a.m. at Highland Presbyterian Church, 111 Highland Ave., Fayetteville.
