FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – In observance of Alcohol Awareness Month this April, Cumberland County Justice Services aims to raise awareness about the challenges faced by those struggling with alcohol abuse and the importance of community support in seeking and sustaining recovery. The observance of Alcohol Awareness Month draws attention to the health and public safety issues caused by the misuse of alcohol.
County residents are encouraged to take time to educate themselves about alcohol use disorder to gain a better understanding of its harmful impacts and the recovery process.
“By sharing knowledge and understanding the science behind addiction, we can all build a sense of empathy and support for those battling alcohol abuse” said Alvin Chestnut, Sobriety Court Coordinator. “The County’s Sobriety Court sees this month as an opportunity to educate the public about alcohol use disorder and the harmful effects on health and the community.”
Excessive alcohol consumption in the state of North Carolina resulted in more than $15.2 billion in economic costs in 2023. These costs included health care expenses (including fetal alcohol disorders), criminal justice expenses, lost workplace productivity and motor vehicular crash expenses.
Sobriety Court offers resources and services to treat high-risk DWI offenders. The mission of Sobriety Court is to not only prohibit the misuse of alcohol, but to also provide support to those who may have struggled with alcohol abuse during their recovery process.
Sobriety Court is a problem-solving court that uses a supervised treatment system to treat high-risk DWI offenders who demonstrate destructive behaviors associated with alcohol abuse.
