Health Department Observes World Breastfeeding Week

Aug 4, 2021, 17:03 PM by Jon Soles
The Health Department is observing World Breastfeeding Week Aug. 1 - 7.

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is observing World Breastfeeding Week by reminding mothers and mothers-to-be about the importance of breast milk for babies.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action designates Aug. 1 – 7 as World Breastfeeding Week. This year’s theme is “Protect Breastfeeding: A Shared Responsibility.” Breastfeeding is associated with lower rates of childhood illness, such as obesity, diabetes and infectious diseases. Breastfeeding also reduces the risk of maternal breast and ovarian cancers.

The Health Department invites mothers and mothers-to-be to a scheduled Zoom webinar “Making Your Milk, Secure Your Bag” hosted by Sandhills Collaborative on Aug. 12 at noon. Topics covered will include preparing for childbirth, returning to work after maternity leave and how to keep providing breastmilk for your baby. The Health Department also encourages families and employers to support breastfeeding mothers.

To attend the webinar, visit us02web.zoom.us/j/82534501115?pwd=cEwydEZPamFzaFdIc1NTMDNlQ0hVUT09. Enter meeting ID 82534501115 and passcode 813840.

The Board of Commissioners unanimously approved a resolution declaring August National Breastfeeding Month and Aug. 1 – 7 World Breastfeeding Week on Aug. 2.
