Residents Urged to Prepare for Tropical Storm Debby

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services urges residents to prepare as slow-moving Tropical Storm Debby is expected to bring a prolonged period of rain, heavy at times, Tuesday through Friday. A Flood Watch is in effect for most of central and eastern North Carolina Tuesday morning through Friday evening.

Emergency Services is monitoring Tropical Storm Debby and working with partners to solidify emergency preparedness measures. Tropical Storm Debby is forecasted to bring significant impacts to central North Carolina as early as Tuesday. The primary threat from Debby is heavy rainfall and potential flooding. Residents are encouraged to prepare now for potential impact.

Emergency Services urges residents to make prepare for the weather by signing up for the Cumberland Alerts emergency notification system and downloading the County App, MyCCNCGov. Residents can take the following steps to prepare for Tropical Storm Debby.

  • Check your emergency kit and restock essential items.
  • Clean gutters and storm drains.
  • Check for tree limbs that could potentially fall and cause damage.
  • Secure outdoor items that could become projectiles.
  • Stay informed by monitoring weather updates and alerts.
  • Be aware of flood-prone areas in your community and make safety plans for your family and pets in advance.

Debby made landfall in Florida on Monday as a Category 1 hurricane. Debby has been downgraded to a tropical storm but is still expected to bring rainfall amounts of 5 to 10 inches.
