FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County’s Department of Public Health is now accepting donations of unwrapped toys for the 2^nd Annual Kids Holiday Party: Highlighting Child Safety. The event will be held Dec. 14, 2024, from 12 – 2:30 p.m., at 1235 Ramsey Street, Fayetteville.

Public Health will be accepting toy donations until Dec. 9. Toy donations may be dropped at the Health Education Division, located at 1235 Ramsey St., Fayetteville.

Holiday Toy Safety Checklist: Before You Purchase a Toy

• Read all warnings and instructions on the box.
• Check labels for age recommendations and be sure to select gifts appropriate for a child’s age ability.
• Avoid purchasing toys with sharp or rigid points, spikes, or dangerous edges.
• Buy toys that will withstand impact and not break into dangerous shards.
• To avoid a choking hazard, steer clear of toys that can fit in a child’s mouth.
• Look for the letters “ASTM”. This means the product meets the national safety standards established by the American Society for Testing and Materials.

Holiday Toy Safety Checklist: After You Purchase a Toy

• Inspect toys for safe, sturdy construction.
• Keep toys intended for older children away from younger children.
• Check all toys periodically for breakage and potential hazards. Damaged or dangerous toys should be repaired or thrown away immediately.
• After playing, store toys properly to avoid risks or falls. To prevent injuries, store toys at a lower level so they are easily in reach for children.
• Supervise children while playing.
