CSX Grant Provides Radiation Detectors for Emergency Services

Nov 26, 2024, 17:01 PM by Sade' Wilson
FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – Cumberland County Emergency Services received two AccuRAD Personal Radiation Detectors (PRDs), made possible through a grant from CSX Corporation. The radiation detectors, which are handheld, will enhance the County’s radiological response capabilities.

The AccuRAD monitors were presented during the Cumberland County Fire Chiefs Association regular meeting held Monday, Nov. 25 at the Emergency Operations Center. These advanced radiation monitors, which will be stationed with the County’s decontamination (DECON) trailers, will provide accurate real-time detection and monitoring of radiological threats.

As part of the Sharon Harris Nuclear Power Plant’s Ingestion Pathway Zone (IPZ), Cumberland County is committed to maintaining a high level of readiness to manage radiological incidents. These resources enable the establishment of DECON stations when needed, supporting effective response across affected areas.

“The acquisition of two AccuRAD Personal Radiation Detectors, made possible through a generous grant from CSX, demonstrate Cumberland County Emergency Services’ dedication to equipping responders with the tools necessary to address complex hazards, thereby fostering a safer environment for residents and emergency personnel alike,” said Emergency Management Coordinator Garry Crumpler.
