FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - On Monday, April 21, 2025, Cumberland County hosted a Joint City-County Liaison Committee Meeting in Room 564 of the Judge E. Maurice Braswell Cumberland County Courthouse, welcoming leaders from the City of Fayetteville and others to discuss key issues affecting the two jurisdictions. The theme for this month’s meeting was Transportation.
The Joint City-County Liaison Committee convenes monthly to provide an opportunity for leaders from the Cumberland County Board of Commissioners and Fayetteville City Council to provide updates, share insights, and discuss topics of mutual interest.
The committee includes three elected officials from each governing body, including the Board of Commissioners chair and vice-chair, and the Fayetteville mayor and mayor pro tem. Committee members for 2025 include Board of Commissioners Vice Chairwoman Veronica Jones (Committee Chair), Chairman Kirk deViere and Commissioner Pavan Patel, Fayetteville Mayor Pro Tem Kathy Jensen (Committee Co-Chair), Mayor Mitch Colvin, and Councilwoman Courtney Banks-McLaughlin.
During the meeting, the Committee received the following updates related to Public Transportation within the County:

Hank Graham, Director of the Fayetteville Area Metropolitan Planning Organization (FAMPO), presented. Mr. Graham provided information on the mission of FAMPO and current goals and projects, including those under the Locally Administered Projects Program and the Unified Planning Work Program. Mr. Graham also discussed the concept of micro transit to include program success in other areas of the state, and a proposed FAMPO assessment and timeline. Tyffany Neal, Director of Fayetteville Area System of Transit (FAST), presented an update on services offered, goals and projects. Those interested can learn more about FAST by visiting the City of Fayetteville website.
Vice Chairwoman Jones and the Committee addressed the sudden closure of the Salvation Army of the Sandhills Region shelter by reading comments from both Mayor Colvin and Chairman deViere. Vice Chairwoman Jones stated the County’s Unhoused Support Center Committee will be meeting in May and plans to discuss the need for shelter.
The meeting adjourned at 1:13 p.m.
The next meeting is scheduled for May 19, 2025, and will be focused on childcare.
