FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. – The Cumberland County Department of Public Health is authorized to administer the Pfizer vaccination for children ages 5-11 and will begin offering shots Nov. 6 at various locations around Cumberland County.
Vaccination clinics for youth 5-11 years old will be held Saturday, Nov. 6, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Headquarters Library, 300 Maiden Lane, and Cliffdale Regional Branch Library, 6882 Cliffdale Road.
The Health Department is also hosting an evening clinic on Nov. 9 at the Health Center, 1235 Ramsey St., from 5-7 p.m. for anyone ages 5 and older. Pfizer, Moderna and the J&J vaccines will be available.
“We are excited to start offering vaccines to the 5 to 11-year-old population who make up nearly 17% of Cumberland County’s population,” said Dr. Jennifer Green, Cumberland County Public Health Director. “We will have many locations throughout the county where you can go for the shot. We want to get as many people vaccinated as possible ahead of the holiday season!”

Parental Consent
Parents are strongly encouraged to make an appointment for their child to receive a COVID-19 vaccination; however, walk-ins will be accepted at the clinics.
Children ages 5-11 will need a parent or guardian to consent for the immunization. Please visit covid19.ncdhhs.gov/vaccines/covid-19-vaccines-children-ages-5-11 for more information about this age group.
Minors ages 12-15 years old will require parental consent as the Pfizer vaccine is still under an Emergency Use Authorization. This applies to first, second and booster doses, as well as immunocompromised minors getting a third dose.
Minors ages 16 and 17 may consent for themselves to receive a first or second dose of Pfizer if they have decisional capacity. Pfizer has full FDA approval for individuals ages 16 years and older.
Testing Information
If you need tested before the Thanksgiving holiday, the Health Department can provide free at-home COVID-19 rapid antigen testing kits. Pick up a kit at the Health Department Monday-Friday with no appointment required. There is a limit of two kits per person. For more information visit our website.
Vaccine Clinic Information
All individuals (age 5 and up) may schedule appointments on the County’s COVID-19 vaccine page at cumberlandcountync.gov/covid19/vaccination. An online application form allows individuals to choose their own appointment date and time. If eligible, you can choose the first, second, or third dose of the vaccine. Second doses are automatically scheduled after the first dose is received. Individuals may attend a “second dose clinic” to receive their first or third dose. Vaccinations are free and no ID is required.

The Cumberland County Department of Public Health was required to wait for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) and the CDC Director’s recommendation on a dose prior to administration. The FDA’s Advisory Committee met Oct. 26 and on Oct. 29, the FDA issued the emergency use authorization to Pfizer for ages 5-11 years. Following that, the CDC ACIP met Nov. 2-3 to make a final recommendation for ages 5-11 years.
