Board of Commissioners and Board of Education Hold Joint Meeting to Discuss Facilities and Funding Needs

Feb 10, 2025

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. — The Cumberland County Board of Commissioners and Board of Education held a joint meeting on Feb. 7, 2025, at 9:30 a.m. at 395 Elementary Dr., Fayetteville, to discuss needs identified by Cumberland County Schools, including facility upgrades, funding, and future planning for the district.

Kevin Coleman, Associate Superintendent of Auxiliary Services, introduced Lance Richards from MTG, who presented a comprehensive study of the district's facilities. Richards said the study showed that many of the county’s schools, particularly high schools, are nearing or exceeding capacity, with many buildings constructed in the 1960’s and requiring significant maintenance and repairs. The school system presented recommended facility investments totaling $805 million.

"Addressing these facility needs and increasing teacher supplement pay is vital for the success of our students," said Board of Commissioners Chairman Kirk deViere. "We will thoroughly review the recommendations presented today and work closely with the Board of Education to prioritize these urgent investments in our infrastructure and educators."

Board of Commissioners Vice Chairwoman Veronica Jones expressed concern over the impact of potential federal funding cuts on special and military education programs, urging the board to consider these factors when determining the district’s funding allocations.

"Given the uncertainty around potential federal funding cuts, it’s crucial we remain proactive in ensuring our schools can continue to meet the diverse needs of our students,” said Board of Commissioners Vice Chairwoman Veronica Jones. “This includes supporting the staffing of social workers, guidance counselors, mental health providers, and special education teachers—areas where our county and the state fall below national standards.”

Other topics discussed included funding for teacher supplements and mental health initiatives.

In closing, Chairman deViere emphasized the importance of a collaborative approach between the Board of Commissioners and the Board of Education, with plans to meet again to review funding options and other recommendations.
